Literature
The first book that we read in Jill's class was The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. This book is about a young girl who grows up in a neighborhood full of oppression and danger. The main character, Esperanza, grows up moving from one neighborhood to another but never having a home she can be proud of.
The second book we read was Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood by Benjamin Alire Saenz. This book is another story of life in a rough neighborhood, this time however, from the perspective of a young man, Sammy. lives in Hollywood New Mexico and struggles with being surrounded by drugs and alcohol.
The third and final book we read during the first semester was The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. This book is written from the perspective of the dog Enzo. Enzo's owner, Denny, is a racecar driver. The book depicts their life together as Denny gets married and has a daughter.
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a very well written book that used a dog's perspective on the world to make an interesting twist on the standard writing format.
