Book club: Ceremony
For my critical lens essay book I chose to read Ceremony by Leslie Silko. It's the story of Tayo, a native american who got PTSD from serving in the US military. It covers topics like racial and class inequality, the effects of war on soldiers after they come home, the changed way that Native Americans have to live, and persevering.
While reading our stories, we chose a "lens" to read them through: reader response theory, critical race theory, queer theory, feminism, and post-colonialism. I felt that it was post colonial theory that most struck me as I was reading so that is the perspective I chose to write my essay from.
While reading I really looked closer at symbolism than I usually do when reading; Silko filled her book with abstract themes and analogies.
I used this book to write my "Critical lens essay". Go to that page to learn more about that writing process and to see the final essay.
