Imaginative Non-Fiction
Part of this project was seeing "I am not your Negro", a documentary about James Baldwin. From that we learned the power of stories and experiences. Using this theme, we wanted to use stories from others to build our own.
Our stories and documentaries were based on interviews we conducted with people in our communities. Our stories incorporated a "nugget" or theme that we got from the interview and we built a story around it.
My story has been through 10 drafts over the course of several weeks, sometimes looked at by piers, sometimes by family members, sometimes by Colleen herself. It is because of these many drafts that I feel that my story has turned out so well. The nuggets I based my story on were wanting more time with a dying loved one and small decisions having big impacts later in life.
